Rosy Baby (www.slingcarrier.com) was created by a mom and dad team who are passionate about baby wearing and promoting its benefits. They worked to create a quality product that is not only affordable and durable, but also fashionable and fun to wear! Their slings come in a wide variety of fabrics and options, so you’re sure to find one that works well for you! Because there are several different types of slings, but you may find that one kind works better than another depending on your baby’s age or preference. Some children like to be held tight, while others may prefer more room to move their arms and legs. As long as you and your child feel secure and happy, use your sling in whatever fashion works best for you both!
While everyone else in the world was in a state of shock on September 11, 2001, I was in the Emergency Room after being hit (while completely stopped) by another driver who was going about 45 MPH. Shockingly, I had no obvious signs of injury – no blood, no cuts – but after a day or two it became rapidly apparent that something was very wrong with my right shoulder. It started popping out of joint, dislocating and sliding all around in the socket, which was as painful as it sounds. To make a long story short, I’ve had five surgeries so far and will need more in the future. For the most part I’ve felt like I was very fortunate, in spite of all the surgeries, because the accident could have been much worse. But, then Anna came along.
Once I became a mother, I was constantly worried about how my shoulder would hold up to the strain of holding my ever-growing infant. It was important to me that I succeed in doing the things that were important to me to do as a mother – such as nursing or taking her to “mommy and me” classes – in spite of my shoulder. I didn’t want Anna to miss out on experiences because her mother couldn’t hold her. One day a friend recommended that I try wearing a baby sling – and I was hooked! I’ve tried lots of different kinds and know a quality sling or carrier when I see one.
Rosy Baby was kind enough to send me one of their Lite-On-Shoulder Hybrid Open Tail slings in Wicker. The Lite-On-Shoulder slings have the advantage of using cast alloy rings instead of the typical welded rings that most slings on the market have – the welded rings have the potential to break and therefore may present a hazard to you and your baby. Hybrid slings are a cross between a pouch and a sling, so they allow for more flexibility as your baby grows and changes. Rosy Baby offers a choice between open or closed tail slings – the difference is simply a matter of personal preference in the length and width of the “tail” that you use to adjust the sling. Also, the thoughtful design of the product is apparent – a slight padding in strategic places such as your shoulder and the top “railing” of the sling is for both comfort and modesty (the small weight of the padding will keep the top of the sling from sliding over your nursing baby and uncovering you both!)
I did test this out briefly with Anna in the sling – all three years of her – and it was surprisingly comfortable. I found that the sling distributed her weight nicely and, if she wasn’t a squirmy toddler who is impossible to keep still, I would have happily carried her around for much longer! She’s the kind of kid that you almost have to tackle in order to get her to give you a hug, so keeping her in a sling is like trying to capture a hurricane in a jar. But when we visit a museum or are traveling, I swear by baby-wearing. Even Anna relaxes and is more alert and excited by the idea of visiting an art museum – once you take the “running around like a maniac” option off of the table, it’s amazing how attentive your baby or toddler can be!
